Currently, Webucator is WIA approved in five states (NY, NJ, CO, ME and OK). In addition to the WIA eligible retraining programs and services we provide to WIA clients, through my blog, we have published resources and information so that others may also benefit from our knowledge and expertise. Our readership likely includes:
- The general public
- WIA counselors and staff
- Legislators and other government officials
While it’s easy to “slam” government agencies for things that go wrong (occasionally justifiably), sometimes they get things right. For example, in an earlier blog, Job hunting? Assistance for the unemployed, I highlighted some online resources offered by the State of Georgia. Today I’d like to mention The Resume Guide, put online by the State of Massachusetts.
The Resume Guide contains a good range of information and it’s quite well done. The guide offers information on resumes for different circumstances and give resume examples, suggestions on networking and lots of tips on resume construction with how handle “special circumstances” like:
- Homemakers returning to the workforce
- People who have been incarcerated
- Persons with physical disabilities
- Military experience
There is a section on common mistakes and things to intentionally leave out, which will help with proofreading your resume (which everyone needs to do, multiple times!). Another section give the employer’s perspective on reading a resume, another good proofing tool to make sure your resume is the best it can be. The final section encompasses cover letters and again gives examples.
While well done, the guide could benefit from some updating to be an even better resource to unemployed and underemployed workers and those looking to switch jobs or careers. Written in 2003, it could cover submitting online resumes in its discussion of types of resumes, for example. Things have changed in our electronic world of job hunting since then. A revision is in order.
